Past
When Desmond was born Hell was not a realm sinner were sent. In fact, at the time of his birth majority of man had not even heard of Hell, and it might have been in large part because demons--the denizens of Hell--had no desire to explore the realm of man. During the time of his birth Hell was governed by one simple concept. "Power is everything" The more power a demon possessed the higher on the hierarchy they were, and the higher up a demon was the less they had to answer for what they did. It was believed that the lower on the totem pole a demon was the less intelligent he was, and those at the very bottom were regarded as nothing more than animals. Through, it might be argued that actual animals were treated better than the lowest ranked demons. It was among these lowest demons that Desmond was born. When his mother was about was about to give birth she along with Desmond's father escaped from the pen that their master had locked her within as it was not uncommon for demons of her status to disappear in order to give birth.
It wasn't fear that Desmond's mother might give birth somewhere else that had her master taking these precautions, but the fact that low ranking demons tended not to be able to find their way home once the deed was done. Sure, enough that was exactly what happened to Desmond's parents. Two years after his birth they were killed over an food dispute than consumed by those whom had slain them as food was that scarce. Desmond not only somehow managed to escape sharing their fate, but fend for himself for a few years. Eventually he was found by a director of an orphanage. Within Hell orphanages were not places where demons went to adopt, but rather a place where demons might find their pets. It was, also, the place that trained pets for high ranking demons whom didn't wish to do the deed themselves.
It was clear to those running the orphanage what status Desmond parents held within society, and they believed he was no better than they. The orphanage were not going to waste the time and resource in training him like they might some of the more intelligent demons that came into their walls, and they even encourage these smarter demons to ignore him. Desmond was not the lower ranking demon they believed him to be. He had the power and intelligence of a higher ranked demon, and he used that intelligence to train himself. He developed his powers at such a rate that the orphanage could no longer ignore the truth of what he was, and it frighten them. They feared what would happen if others discovered Desmond. The very foundation of their society would be shaken if not shattered. At first, they beat him whenever he developed his powers further. but when that did nothing to discourage him they decided the only answer was to lock him away within a room with only a door with a slot small enough to slide in a tray of food.
This room was his home for several years until an high ranking demon released him. This demon had not come to the orphanage with the intent of freeing Desmond. He merely had been on a killing spree that swept across the land, and the orphanage laid in the path of his carnage. The demon had killed everyone else within the orphanage, and entered Desmond's room with every intention of allowing whomever was sealed inside to share the same fate. However, he was taken aback when Desmond didn't show an ounce of fear others who had crossed his path displayed. The demon inquired about his lack of fear, and Desmond didn't answer for the longest time---so long that the demon thought perhaps he was incapable of speech. Eventually, Desmond told the demon he was not afraid of dying and that the world might be better if a monster such as himself was eliminated.
These words amused the demon greatly, and he decided to adopt Desmond as his heir. He would train Desmond not only how to use his powers, but everything he needed to know to be a Lord of Hell, and when his training was complete he would kill the demon. Desmond started to protest, but the demon cut him off by telling him that they were monsters, and that was what monsters did. Desmond finding nor argument with the demon's logic agreed to his terms. He proved a quick learner, and within no time he was ready to fulfill his end of the bargain. He had grown quite fond of his mentor during this short time, and only kept his promise because he thought death would bring him peace. He had no desire of being a lord of hell. He just wanted enough power so he would never be sealed away within an windowless room once again, but he quickly discovered that he could not get rid of his new title or the responsibilities that came with it. Through, he did find a work around by naming the general of his armies his steward, and allowing him to become ruler of his land in everything but name.
Time marched on with nothing of note occurring until the day that an outsider entered Hell. This outsider was called God, and he had came to Hell seeking the aid of demons. Humans had become slaves to these beings called Dark ones, and man's original protector---angels--begged God to find another way protect their charges when it became clear they were no longer up to the task. God answered their prayers by coming to Hell and seeing if any demons were willing to take up the mantle as man's protector. Humans would provide demons with substance if they agreed to be their new guardians. Many demons agreed to these terms, and they flocked to the human lands to make true of their words Desmond remained within Hell due to the fact he found the entire notion ridiculous. Demons should stay in Hell. They had everything they needed right within their own lands. Eventually, demons begun to hurt their charges just as much as those they were suppose to protect them against did.
A girl named Sara Jean climbed to the top of the tallest mountain and convinced God to return the sun to man. The return of the sun gave them the edge they needed against the Dark Ones, and it allowed angels to come to earth with all their powers, but it was still not enough when it came to demons. Eventually, God created Sol--Justice---who too became corrupt when her lover was killed and changed into a being of vengeance whom traveled the Earth slaughtering every demon she stumbled upon. Desmond responded to the news of this with a sorta told you so attitude. He might not have ever set foot upon human lands if it wasn't for a dare. He expected his trip to be short, and it might have been if he hadn't meet her---an angel of music whom came down to Earth to teach man. They developed a fast friendship that even quicker turned romantic. He wanted nothing more than to spend the rest of his existence with her, but that seemed not to be in the cards. Desmond had to return to Hell to answer the challenge of another demon lord whom refused to accept Desmond's general as the master of his lands.
Desmond not knowing which of them would emerge victorious within a duel as well as seeing the perfect way to officially be free of his land decided to simply just give his challenger what he sought. This did not please the other demon lord, whom raged at Desmond calling him a coward among many other unsavory things in an attempt to convince Desmond to fight him. However, when it became clear that Desmond would not be swayed he accepted Desmond's offer. Believing that he could now live the rest of his existence with his beloved uninterrupted returned to earth only to find that dream shattered. His angel's wings had been removed. In order to spare her the gruesome fate of becoming a ghoul, Desmond decided to kill her, but before he could complete the deed a stranger approached him. He told Desmond that the lost of their wings affected angels within every life they lived. Desmond vowed to hunt her down, and do what he must to protect her.
The stranger, however, offered him a different solution. He promised to keep his beloved safe while Desmond searched for a cure in exchange Desmond must do something for him. Desmond was quick to agree there was no price he wasn't willing to pay to keep his beloved from having to endure the fate awaiting for her if he never found a cure. The stranger wished for Desmond to get to his beloved's sister--an angel by the name of Cira. He knew of Cira from the many times his beloved talked about her. Desmond was tasked with keeping others from growing close to her, and make her greatly question her worth. He started by ruining her relationship with an half-breed angel named Syndrii. He did this by killing Cira's human husband and the children they had together, and making it appear like Syndrii did the deed. Desmond decided to keep one of her children when said child amused him by calling him a monster.
He told Cira's daughter that perhaps someday she will be the hero that slaughters this monster, and forced her to endure many horrible things until one day she became pregnant with his child. He would not see that child be born as his pet fled to give birth elsewhere. For sixteen years, he did not know what became of his unborn child until he stumbled upon him one day. He was being raised by human farmers. He did not believe they were raising his son out of the kindness of their heart, They had some alternative motives, and he would pry the truth out of them before he killed them. More than that he wished for his son to hear their confession. Even if they would not admit their guilt, his son might be upset over them pretending to be his parents, but to his shock he was not. His son told those whom had raised him that family was more than blood. They had shown time and time again to be worthy of the title of mother and father.
Desmond knew within that moment there was nothing he could say or do to convince his son to regard them within a different light, but he thought perhaps he could convince him to acknowledge his relationship to him. Try as his might he cannot convince his son to call him father. It was around this time that he started to stumble upon the incarnation of his mentor--the demon lord whom freed him from that windowless room. It seemed that the insanity that affected him within that first life they met affected him within every other. Desmond thought that perhaps he was liked his beloved in the sense that he had a vital part of his essence removed, but he dared not approach the stranger to safe guard his mentor the same way he did his beloved. Instead. he merely killed his mentor when it became clear that his insanity became too much.
Eventually he stumbled upon his mentor not long after he was born, and his parents believing they had just brought a monster into the world were more than happy to hand over their newborn to Desmond. Desmond thought if he drove his mentor insane before the insanity from his demonic life set in that he could prevent that demonic insanity from possessing him, but this only delayed the process not stop it and once again Desmond was forced to kill his mentor.
Present
Many years passed before Desmond came across any sign of his mentor. It came in the form of a girl that looked an awful lot like his mentor. Desmond knew that she wasn't him, but he decided to keep her nevertheless. He later learned that she was prophesized to be his mentor newest incarnation mother, and his father would be none other than Syndrii. He encouraged the two to sleep together and sure enough the girl eventually gave birth to his mentor. Desmond convinced Syndrii to hand his child over to him by telling him that his many enemies--including Cira---would use his child as a way to get back at him, and they might decide that the best way to do this is to kill his son. Desmond ended up placing his mentor into a whore house that was much like the orphanages within Hell. It wasn't merely the training that he was after, but rather hope that the harsh conditions that his mentor would be forced to endure there would stay the insanity that affected him within every life a little longer.
He knew nothing he did would keep it away forever, but any time he could buy was more than worth it. As for his mentor's mother, Desmond knew she would never understand this logic and so he simply made her forget that she had given birth to him. However, she didn't forget forever. She remembered after she ran off with some demon lord and gave birth to a daughter. She came to Desmond hoping that she might convince him to tell her where her son was. She tried to appeal to his better nature, and Desmond responded to these attempts by selling her daughter to another demon---just to spite and prove to her what a monster he was. He knew she couldn't allow her to return to her demon lover. She would convince him to help her find her son, and that was not something he could have. He decided to lock her up, and make a doll to return back to her demon lover in her place.
One day he received news that his mentor escaped from the whore house. He knew very well whom aided him, but he says nothing. Perhaps, it has something to do with the fact he doesn't fault Syndrii for his decision. He might have done the same thing for his child. However, he knew that he needed to find him before the insanity takes hold, and has spent the next six years searching for him.
